All eyes are going to be on QB Robert Griffin III, the man who took home the Heisman Trophy this year. He was just tremendous, and when he gets going, he isn’t going to be stopped by any defense in the nation, especially one of the Pac-12 that was on the mediocre side at that. Griffin’s numbers were just off the chart. He posted the highest quarterback rating in a single season in NCAA history, and he averaged 10.8 yards per pass attempt. A 72.4 percent completion percentage is one of the best in the nation as well. Griffin threw for 3,998 yards and rushed for 655 more, accounting for a total of 45 TDs.
Of course, Griffin couldn’t do all of this by himself. RB Terrence Ganaway was one of the more efficient rushers in the Big XII with 1,338 yards and 16 TDs. WR Tevin Reese had 811 yards and seven TDs, and he was third on the team. WR Terrance Williams had 53 grabs for 895 yards and 11 scores, while Kendall Wright was good for 101 receptions, 1,572 yards, and 13 trips to the end zone.
Washington had a bad start to the season by just barely surviving against the Eastern Washington Eagles 30-27, and things really didn’t get all that much better. A 5-1 start to the campaign ended up getting a heck of a lot worse when the schedule got harder. The team was crushed by the Stanford Cardinal, Oregon Ducks, and USC Trojans, and the only win in the last month of the season came against the Washington State Cougars. There is a lot of potential on this team, but as QB Keith Price, RB Chris Polk, and WR Jermaine Kearse are all tremendous athletes. Kearse and Price probably underachieved this year from what they were expecting, but Polk ran for 1,341 yards, and he was a fringe Heisman Trophy candidate for awhile because of his 11 TDs, one of the better marks in the Pac-12.
In the end, we remember what happened last year when Washington looked tremendously overmatched against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Holiday Bowl. Not only did the team come out and cover the game as a huge underdog, but it also won the game outright, going away. We do love this Baylor team and think that it would be a sin if Griffin didn’t go out as a winner in his final game, but there is no way that we are going to lay nine points in the bowl season between two teams that probably are tremendously comparable. Don’t get sucked into the hype of the Bears, as they are clearly overrated in this game because of their defense, which is one of the worst in the Big XII.
