On paper, there really isn’t much of a way that Cal should be able to stick around with UCLA. Remember that the Golden Bears have yet to cover a game this year, and they have had some particularly ugly games against some good teams. The problem isn’t scoring. The problem is certainly trying to figure out how to stop the other team. Cal ranks 123rd in the country in total defense at 526.0 yards per game and 124th in opposing scoring at 45.0 points per game allowed. Teams are averaging over 300 yards per game through the air and over 220 yards per game on the ground, and if that keeps up all season long, that’s going to be the death of this team this year.
Though the Bruins are going to get their 40 points in this game for sure, can they slow down Cal enough to cover this game? The defense has been okay, but this is a very good Golden Bears offense that is averaging almost 400 yards per game through the air and nearly 100 offensive snaps per game. Keep in mind that the Golden Bears are 4-1 ATS in the last five games in this series, including last season’s resounding 43-17 win last season when the Bruins were favored by a field goal. Cal won’t win this game, but there is no reason not to believe that this game won’t be at least a cover on Saturday night. Expect a win by three scores but no more for UCLA, which will at least keep the crowd in Pasadena satisfied.
