Are the Longhorns really anywhere near as good offensively as they showed last week against the New Mexico State Aggies? It’s tough to look past a team that put up over 700 yards of offense, but we know that there were flaws that are going to come out as the year goes on. QB David Ash accounted for over 400 yards of offense all by himself, and it almost looked like he was a video game quarterback out there at times, but he also had his share of struggles. The offense turned the ball over a few times on the day, and the beginning of the game was shoddy, and that’s what worries us against BYU.
We already know that the Cougars are a wreck offensively at this point, and their defense is the only thing that is going to carry the way this year. QB Taysom Hill completed just 13-of-40 passes on the day last week against the Virginia Cavaliers, and that’s all sorts of suspect at best. Take away the 42 points that BYU gave up last season against the Oregon State Beavers and what’s left is a ‘D’ that has conceded just an average of 12.2 points per game over the course of the last two seasons. Texas will do a little bit better than that on Saturday, but not enough to make it so this is an ‘over’ contest. We expect this one to be in the 40s when push comes to shove at best.
