Carolina Panthers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Date and Time: Thursday 10/24/13 at 8:25pm on NFL Network
Game Line: Carolina Panthers -5.5 (from JustBet)
NFL Thursday Night Week 8 Preview: The Carolina Panthers won their second game in a row on Sunday, beating the St. Louis Rams 30-15 at home as a 7.5 point favorite. In the week 8 Thursday night NFL football matchup, the Panthers will be traveling to Tampa Bay, and will play a Buccaneers team that is on an 0-4 against the spread skid and id 0-6 early in the 2013 season. Head coach Greg Schiano is looking more and more out of his element as the games go by. The Buccaneers were held to just one touchdown in their four trips to the red zone against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday in a game they lost 31-23. Rookie quarterback Mike Glennon hit his number one wide out Vincent Jackson for ten catches and two touchdowns. They did suffer a pretty serious loss, starting running back Doug Martin will be out for the foreseeable future with a shoulder injury. Things won’t get any easier for the Bucs as they host the Panthers third ranked defense, top five both against the run and the pass. Tampa will have a very hard time moving the ball if they continue to average 10+ penalties per game like they have through the first six games. The combination of rookie QB, inexperienced head coach and totally inexperienced RB makes Tampa a very hard team to get behind offensively right now. The Panthers offense has been very strong running the ball with QB Cam Newton and RB DeAngelo Williams averaging almost 200 yards per game combined, good for 5th in the NFL. They’re going to need to rely heavily on the run on Thursday if they’re going to cover this number because the Tampa Bay defense is also top 5 and held the Atlanta Falcons to 1 yard per rush last week. This is a good spot for Tampa Bay at home, on a short week, against an offense they can contain, the winning team in this contest won’t break 21 points and that just adds value to the anti-public home dog angle. We won’t promote backing the Tampa Bay Bucs many times the rest of this season, and while they probably won’t win here but they have the defense and hopefully just enough offense to cover this spread against a Panthers team they’ve had success against against the spread.
Panthers at Buccaneers Free NFL Picks: Buccaneers +5.5 and under 39.5
Panthers at Buccaneers Game Prediction: 19-16 Panthers
What to expect in this week 8 NFL match up: Neither of these below average offenses will have any success against the opposition’s top 5 defense. Carolina will use a combination of Cam Newton, DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert to ground and pound their way down the field but the Buccanneers run defense will keep them out of the endzone. The Carolina defense will have a field day against a rookie QB and a new starting running back. This will be another Thursday Night game where points and effective offensive football are hard to come by while turnovers, penalties and punting will rule the day.
