San Fransisco 49ers at St. Louis Rams
Date and Time: Thursday 9/26/13 at 8:30pm on NFL Network
Game Line: San Francisco 49ers -3 (from JustBet)
Preview: There is no doubting the fact that the 49ers offense is going through some rough times right now, especially in the passing game. Colin Kaepernick doesn’t have a ton of experience under his belt and he doesn’t exactly have top-tier receiving options to throw to. The return of TE Vernon Davis should help both in run blocking and in the passing game against a Rams defense that has apparently regressed from a season ago. The 49ers were a 7.5 point favorite in this game before last week but their debacle against the Colts on Sunday has dropped it all the way to 3. Many people will say this is a “trap game” for those backing the 49ers, but we disagree, as they need to be in must win mode if they’re going to keep their hopes of winning the NFC West alive. The St. Louis Rams seem to have hit a road block in their rebuilding process. Their lack of experience both at offensive line and skill position players has their offense sputtering recently, while their defense has not performed to the standard they set last year. This will pose a problem against a San Fransisco defense that still has talent, despite missing several key contributors. If the 49ers can follow the blue print the Cowboys defense laid out for them, stopping the run and bringing pressure to get the QB Sam Bradford, they should easily contain the Rams offensively. Offensively, they need to get back to their roots. The running game is going to need to carry this team, and Colin Kaepernick needs to get the option game going again for the 49ers to be successful. They have one of the best coaches in the NFL and he won’t let this team fall out of the playoff picture. The Rams are an improved team this season, but facing a San Francisco team with their backs to the wall will be a problem for them defensively.
49ers vs. Rams Free NFL Pick: 49ers -3 and under 42.5
49ers vs. Rams Game Score Prediction: 24-17 49ers
What to expect in this week 4 NFL matchup: The 49ers will stop what little run game the Rams have by scoring early and forcing Sam Bradford to be one-dimensional. Then it will be open season for their blitz packages and trouble for a young and inexperienced Rams offensive line. St. Louis has too much youth up front and at the skill positions to have success against the 49ers defense. Offensively, the 49ers just need to run the ball. Playing a game where they don’t fall behind early like they have the last two weeks will help. For the San Francisco offense to be effective they need to run the ball on more than 50% of their plays and we expect to see that from them this week against a Rams defense that has not lived up to the expectations either. San Francisco will quiet all of the talk about them missing the playoffs with a nice road win in their division.
