Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers Sunday NFL Football Analysis: After missing the opener with a rib injury, the Panthers’ two-time pro bowl quarterback will return Sunday as the team hosts the Detroit Lions, who turned in one of the best defensive performances in week 1. They’re in position to start 2-0 for the first time since 2008 after a week 1 win against Tampa Bay. Backup quarterback Derek Anderson filled in for Cam Newton with a 230 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin looked like a rookie of the year candidate, catching six passes for 92 yards and a touchdown while tight end Greg Olsen caught the other TD. Olsen’s reception total has climbed in each of his three seasons with Newton and with Benjamin, maybe the Carolina passing attack won’t be as bad as many people initially thought. The Detroit Lions also caused some problems for their week one opponent, the New York Giants, with a 35-14 home win. The Giants were limited to just 197 total yards and a plus two turnover differential. This came as a relief for everyone who watched the Lions collapse last season posting a minus 11 turnover mark in their last 7 games going 1-6. Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson connected for two first quarter scores as Stafford went 22 of 32 for 346 yards and two TD’s. Running the ball was a bit more of a struggle as the team averaged 2.5 yards per carry on 30 attempts, though that could have had plenty to do with in-game injuries to the offensive line. The Lions lost Corey Hilliard and LaAdrian Waddle to the injured reserve and that is going to play a huge factor against a very strong Carolina defensive front seven. This will be one of the most interesting games of the week as both teams are teetering on the edge of being playoff relevant and both play to each other’s strengths. The Lions like to have time and throw the ball around, Carolina likes to get pressure and blitz. Carolina likes to run the ball, Detroit’s defensive front four is one of the best in the league. This will be a highly competitive game that will come down to the wire, a spot where the Lions have excelled, with game winning drives and late touchdowns to the likes of Calvin Johnson.

Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers Game Prediction: 23-20 Lions
What to expect in this Week 2 NFL Football match up: This will be a low scoring, defensive struggle as both teams will try to do what they’re good at offensively, to no avail. The three headed rushing attack of DeAngelo Williams, Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart will be contained by the Lions defensive front seven, while the Lions passing attack will be contained because of their injuries on the offensive line allowing the Carolina defense to get pressure on Matt Stafford. If Stafford can limit the turnovers and throw the ball away when necessary, the Lions will have a chance to win at the end of the game and with Calvin Johnson at receiver, they will score late and steal a game in Carolina.
