Thursday NFL Analysis: The 7–3 Kansas City Chiefs travel west on Thursday night to take on the division rival Oakland Raiders for the week 12 edition of Thursday Night Football on NFL Network.

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the hottest teams in the league. Since their bye week in October, the Chiefs have won five games in a row and are coming off a 24–20 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Kansas City’s offense is centered on the run game with Jamal Charles, as they rank 5th in the league in yards per game on the ground averaging 139.8 yards per game. Their passing game is ranked 31st in the league averaging only 188 yards per game. Their defense has been good this season and ranked 8th in the league in total defense. Their pass defense has been stellar allowing just 201.6 yards per game.

The Oakland Raiders are well, they’re the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders are the league’s only winless team and sit at the bottom of the AFC West at 0–10. If there is anything positive to say about Oakland’s season it’s the fact that they are 5–5 against the spread. So, I guess you could say they’re somewhat competitive, seeing how their strength of schedule is pretty significant with their opponents having a combined 55–35 record. The Raiders offense ranks dead last in the league, averaging just 275.8 yards per game. Rookie quarterback Derek Carr has had his growing pains this season completing 221 of 370 pass attempts for 2074 yards with 13 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Their leading receiver is former Green Bay Packer James Jones, who has 498 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns on the season.

If you have read some of my write ups, you’ll know I base my analysis on stats and the situation. Well boy do we have a situation here. Often during the football season you’ll hear of what is called a sandwich spot, trap game, look ahead spot, what have you. Well that’s what we have here. You have a Kansas City team that has won five games in a row, they’re 8-2 ATS, and they just got a big win at home against the world champion Seattle Seahawks. If you didn’t see the game it was pretty physical, and now they have to travel to Oakland to play at 0–10 team. If you look at the schedule, you’ll see what’s next for the Chiefs next week. A primetime game against the highly talented and division rival Denver Broncos. As far as Oakland’s concerned, what do they have to play for? Well first off, no team wants to go 0-16, and judging by their 13-6 loss in San Diego last Sunday, they’re not giving up and you’re still going to get an effort. Secondly, this is the Raiders’ only primetime game this season. Do you think they want to be embarrassed in front of a national audience? I don’t expect that to be the case, and while Oakland is a winless team, they’ve been competitive at times, and there has to be a sense of pride and professionalism. I’m expecting the Oakland Raiders to give a max effort on Thursday night on national TV, and I like them to keep this within the number. Betting ugly teams is hard to do, but sometimes you have to hold your nose on your way up to the window, because even the worst teams present some sort of value. The Raiders will show up Thursday night, and don’t be surprised if they get the outright win.
