Chargers Notes: We are so used to the Chargers tricking us instead of treating us in situations like this one that it isn’t even remotely funny. San Diego should be dominating the AFC West, but instead, it is more or less just coasting through and hoping to turn on the jets in the playoffs. QB Philip Rivers has just been atrocious this season, throwing for just seven TDs against nine picks, and things don’t really look to be getting any better for him any time in the near future. RB Mike Tolbert is going to be out of the lineup in this one after sitting out of practice all week, which could mean more work for the suddenly surging RB Ryan Mathews. Defensively, the Chargers gave up 27 points last week to the New York Jets, including 17 unanswered in the second half, marking the third time this year that this unit allowed 24 or more in a game.
Chiefs Notes: Speaking of teams that might be treats instead of tricks… Last year, Kansas City came right out of the blocks and dominated from the get go, knocking off these Chargers in this very same fixture in Week 1. It led the division race from wire to wire as a result. This year though, it was a totally different case. The Chiefs were blasted in their first three games of the year, but they came back to win three straight. Granted, there is still a major, major question mark out there about how good or bad this team is. Those three losses against Detroit, Buffalo, and these Chargers seem excusable, whereas the wins against Oakland (without a quarterback), Indianapolis, and Minnesota were more or less expected. This is a big, big swing game, as it will not only probably define Kansas City’s season, but it will also determine how the standings look in the AFC West. A win for the Chiefs creates a three way tie at 4-3 atop the division. A loss leaves it at 3-4 and two games out with the season tiebreaker to make up as well, a mountain that probably will not be climbable.
The Final Word: These are just the same old Chargers that we have grown accustomed to. They’ll find a way to beat Green Bay next week at home, but they’ll fold in this one. KC has covered four straight. Not only will it be five straight on Sunday, but it’ll come in upset fashion. We’ll make this our third and final upset pick of the week in Week 8.
