Current Major League Baseball Top 8 Rankings
The Major League Baseball season is just getting to the point of the season where we get a better understanding of which teams will likely be big factors for the rest of the season. Interestingly two of the biggest favorites every year in the American League, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees got off to slow starts but have rallied back in the last few games. Meanwhile, the defending World Champions the Philadelphia Phillies find themselves trailing near the bottom of the National League East. Believe it is safe to say that there have been some unexpected starts, but there is still a long season ahead. We breakdown our weekly rankings of the top 8 teams in Major League Baseball.
1. Florida Marlins (11-1)
Talk about coming out of the gates red hot, Florida has come out firing on all cylinders. The Marlins have won 7 straight games including a 3 game sweep over the Atlanta Braves who were thought by many to be a surprise team in the East this season. Jorge Cantu leads the team with a .368 batting average. Florida continuing success will rely heavily around the pitching staff and perhaps mainly around Josh Johnson who is already 2-0 this season. However, Florida is off to a tremendous start that has the entire league’s attention.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers (10-3)
No surprise in the National League West as the Dodgers have claimed their superiority very early in the season by winning 8 straight games. The Dodgers also own an undefeated home record of 6-0. Matt Kemp has been very impressive with the stick having a hit in every game this season while batting .383 and the Dodgers offensive threats are a force to be reckoned with.
3. Toronto Blue Jays (10-4)
While most people are quick to claim Boston and New York favorites in the AL East every season, they were knocked off the throne last year by Tampa Bay. Toronto has got the early lead this season even though they are big underdogs to win the division. However, the Blue Jays success has come over some questionable competition and it will be interesting to see how things shape out in the upcoming weeks.
4. Chicago Cubs (7-4)
Well this is suppose to be the year for the Cubs right? Many baseball fans agree that Chicago should have the rather descent edge in the NL Central with perhaps the best rotation in their division. However while the 7-4 start is definitely not bad, it is also not that convincing as well. The back to back wins over St. Louis should help ease the mind a bit.
5. Boston Red Sox (7-6)
The Red Sox got off two a miserable 2-6 start which did not quite live up to their status be one of the big favorites in the American League. However, soon as the questions arose Boston shut them down by winning their last 5 games including a 12-1 blowout over Baltimore on Monday. These types of Red Sox runs are all too familiar except they have usually come later in the year.
6. St. Louis Cardinals (8-5)
The question heading into the season has been focused entirely on the pitching. While the pitchers are off to a good start, who knows how they will perform down the road. The Cardinals big attribute they have going is the stellar defensive play that should carry them along way this season. The Cubs might have got the best winning two out of the first 3 in their series, but I would not count the Cardinals out for being a spoiler in the NL Central.
7. San Diego Padres (9-4)
Surprisingly San Diego has won series against the New York Mets, Philadelphia, and swept San Francisco. Not to mention the Padres split their opening 4 game series with the Dodgers and everyone should see that Los Angeles is not exactly light competition. Adrian Gonzalez already has 5 homeruns to lead the powerful offensive attack that should give opposing bullpens trouble throughout the year.
8. New York Yankees
So much for the couple hundred million shelled out to buy a World Series. Well that may be a little harsh, but you would certainly expect New York to have a more convincing start. The Yankees have the most talented team in baseball as always which you would expect to be dominant. However, losing 22-4 and 10-2 to Cleveland is just embarrassing. Surely things have to get better. |
