| Tight ends have always played an important part in NFL Football history. They make key receptions as well as providing all important blocking for the running backs when needed to do so. They don't always get the attention that quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers do, but the good ones are well respected by everyone in the NFL. Usually tight ends are a great second, third, or fourth option in an NFL team's offensive playbook. This makes it stand out then that there are actually three teams in NFL Football who have tight ends and not wide receivers as their career leaders in receptions.
The Baltimore Ravens:
The Baltimore Ravens are a newer team in the NFL having only begun play in 1996 after Art Modell moved his franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore. Modell may have left the Browns name, logo, and record book behind but he took with him a team that knew how to make use of the tight end. The Ravens all time leader in receiving? Tight end Todd Heap who the Ravens drafted out of Arizona State University in 2001.
The Kansas City Chiefs:
The Kansas City Chiefs have been in professional football since 1960. They started out as one of the founding members of the old American Football League (AFL) and were absorbed into the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger. With a team history that goes back decades, it may shock some fans to find out that their career leader in receiving is also a tight end, it's Tony Gonzalez who came to them in the 1997 NFL Draft out of the University of California.
The Cleveland Browns:
The Baltimore Ravens were mentioned previously as one of the three teams who have a tight end as their career receiving leader. One of the people in charge of the Ravens' player personnel decisions is former Cleveland Browns tight end Ozzie Newsome. Newsome was drafted by Cleveland in the first round of the 1978 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama and went on to play a 13 season career for the Browns. He also became the Cleveland Browns career receiving leader at the position of tight end.
While tight ends are usually not the feature players of a given offense, Ozzie Newsome, Tony Gonzalez, and Todd Heap show that when you find a good one they are worth their weight in gold.
