The Louisville Cardinals and Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles took some major steps in the right direction this year, as both programs were fantastic by their standards. For the Cards, a trip to the Beef O'Brady's Bowl shows growth for a school that featured years of dismay under the direction of departed Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe. The Golden Eagles really wanted to win Conference USA this year, and though they didn't pull it off, they did beat the C-USA champs and ended up with arguably one of the best teams in the history of the school. But which team will beat the Beef O'Brady's Bowl odds in this one? Here are our college football bowl picks for Tuesday night's duel in the Sunshine State.

Beef O'Brady's Bowl Matchup: Louisville Cardinals vs. Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles
Date: Tuesday, December 21st, 8:00 ET
Location: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL
Beef O'Brady's Bowl Line: Louisville -2.5
Over/Under 57

Cardinals Notes: It was a great first year calling the shots for Head Coach Charlie Strong, who guided the Redbirds to a bowl game in his first year as a head coach in the rough and tumble Big East. Strong could have a major problem on his hands on Tuesday night if QB Adam Froman's leg injury continues to act up. Froman was supposed to be the catalyst for a spread attack this year, and though he had a respectable 11/4 TD/INT ratio, a 60.6 completion percentage and just 1,633 yards through the air wasn't really what the doctor ordered. What we found out about the 'Ville this year was that the wide receivers just weren't good enough to compete at this type of level in a BCS conference. None caught even 40 passes, and none got to the 500 yard mark either. However, the ground game was a significantly difference story. RB Bilal Powell only had about 800 yards in the running department for his career coming into this year, but all of a sudden, he shined very, very brightly. Powell was the second best runner in a Big East full of top backs, as he rumbled 211 times for 1,330 yards and ten scores. The Cardinals really made a name for themselves defensively in the Big East this year, though. They shut out two foes this year and only allowed two teams to score more than 24 points against them all season long. This should be a great test for a defense which allowed just 298.4 yards and 18.7 points per game. The aerial game for the opponents was just shut down on a regular basis, as teams only averaged 162.5 passing yards per game, No. 9 in the country.

Golden Eagles Notes: Was this the best version of the Golden Eagles ever? Even though SMS has had seasons with more than eight wins before, it's not often that you can go on the road and beat the conference champs and put up a legitimate Top 20 offense in the nation in the same year, especially without winning the league title. Head Coach Larry Fedora has a lot to be proud of for this squad this year, especially offensively. QB Austin Davis will be a 3,000 yard passer by the time this one is over, and he already has ten TDs on the ground and 18 more through the air, against just six INTs. Just like Louisville, there aren't a ton of great receiving options on this team, though WR Kevin Bolden and WR Johdrick Morris both had at right around 660 yards on the season. On the ground, five different men, including Davis, rushed for at least 228 yards, led by RB Kendrick Hardy, who had 855 yards and seven scores on the campaign. The Golden Eagles ranked No. 15 in the country in total offense at 461.1 yards per game and No. 15 in scoring at 37.6 points per game. However, their defense was a totally different story. SMS allowed 56 and 41 points respectively in its final two games of the season, and the unit gave up at least 41 points five times on the year. Giving up 29.4 points per game certainly wasn't what was expected this year, but it was the reason for which the Golden Eagles didn't win the East Division of Conference USA.

The Final Word: The Cardinals are going to make for a tough team to top in this one, but we're not so sure that the Golden Eagles aren't the right side. Conference USA was significantly better than people give it credit for this year, and it made start to be proven this week at the Beef O'Brady's Bowl. Louisville will get a great final game out of Powell, but its strengths will be countered by the strengths of the C-USA reps. The Golden Eagles fly out of St. Pete with a win in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl.

Kansas Jayhawks @ Southern Mississippi (-5)
Friday, September 17th
8:00 ET, MM Roberts Stadium, Hattiesburg, MS

Last week, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles bounced back from a crushing opening night loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks and handed FCS Prairie View A&M a 34-7 defeat. Superstar WR DeAndre Brown showed that he was getting back on track in the game by hauling in five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers defense. QB Austin Davis also put up improved numbers in the victory, completing 11 of 18 passes for 178 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The Golden Eagles rushing attack also put up much better stats, carrying the ball 47 times for 253 yards (5.4 YPC). Southern Miss will face a big step up in competition this week though when they take on the Kansas Jayhawks. The Jayhawks shocked much of the college football betting world last week with an eyebrow raising 28-25 win against the then #15 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Many NCAA football expert handicappers wrote off the Jayhawks after their embarrassing 6-3 opening loss to North Dakota State, but HC Turner Gill’s team showed that their worries were premature. QB Jordan Webb was effective for Kansas, completing 62% of his passes for 179 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, while RB James Sims had a solid game in rushing for 101 yards and a TD on 17 carries. This is a ripe spot for a letdown for Kansas though, and if the Jayhawks don’t bring their ‘A’ game they will leave Hattiesburg with a big 'L'.

Prediction: Southern Miss 24 – Kansas 14

#24 California Golden Bears @ Nevada Wolfpack (+3)
Friday, September 17th
10:00 ET, Mackay Stadium, Reno, NV

In the first two weeks of the season, the California Golden Bears have shown why they are legitimate contenders for the Pac-10 title in 2010. The Golden Bears outscored their opponents 104-10 and have been absolutely dominant on both sides of the ball. Last Saturday, QB Kevin Riley filled the stat sheet by completing 15 of 24 passes for 197 yards with four touchdowns to four different receivers. RB Shane Vereen also complemented the offensive attack by carrying the ball 16 times for 59 yards and a score while catching three passes for 18 yards and a TD. The defense was particularly impressive, holding the Buffaloes to 239 total yards and forcing five turnovers. The Golden Bears defense will face their toughest test so far this season when they take on the Nevada Wolfpack this Friday night. Nevada broke all sorts of WAC and NCAA records last season and was the first team in NCAA history to have three 1,000 yard rushers in the same season. QB Colin Kaepernick is off to a great start again this season and put up video game type numbers in last week’s 51-6 win against Colorado State. Kaepernick carried the ball 11 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns while also completing 72% of his passes for 241 yards and two scores against the Rams. RB Vai Taua was impressive as well for the Wolfpack carrying the ball 15 times for 118 yards and a touchdown. Expect a high scoring affair in this one and the last team with the ball may very well come out on top.

Prediction: Nevada 38 – California 34

Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (+14) @ South Carolina Gamecocks
Thursday, September 2nd
7:30 ET, Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, SC

The Gamecocks are going to come into this one full of question marks. Yes, we know that QB Stephen Garcia is going to be the man under center and that he is a very dangerous threat every time he drops back to throw the pigskin, but there are as many as seven starters that could be suspended before the game kicks off. TE Weslye Saunders has already been informed of his suspension, and in Saunders, the Cocks are losing their second best returning receiver from a year ago. HC Larry Fedora always believes that his team can hit the road and take out the big boys across the country, and this will be no exception. QB Austin Davis is back from his foot injury that kept him out of the final two thirds of last season, and many think that he could be amongst the best QBs in Conference USA. SC HC Steve Spurrier has never lost to an non-BCS conference foe (38-0), but that could be in some serious jeopardy on Thursday night. We'll give the Gamecocks the slight upper hand, but our NCAA football picks are clearly on Southern Miss to stick in front of this two TD spread.

Prediction: South Carolina 31 – Southern Miss 27

#15 Pittsburgh Panthers (+3) @ #24 Utah Utes
Thursday, September 2nd
8:30 ET, Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, UT

QB Jordan Wynn really made a name for himself at the end of last season, and we think that by the end of this year, he could be in store for great things at Utah. Just one problem: This isn't the end of the year. The Utes are going to have all sorts of problems trying to keep the Pittsburgh front four off of Wynn's back, and if that unit can successfully get pressure and leave seven guys back in the secondary to cause havoc, there are going to be plenty of turnovers. At that point, all HC Dave Wannstedt has to do is put the ball into the hands of RB Dion Lewis. Lewis rushed for just short of 1,800 yards a year ago and could be a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate by the time the season is said and done. Even though QB Tino Sunseri is taking over for the departed Bill Stull, we still don't think that the Panthers have any major problems getting out of Salt Lake City with an upset that will avenge the 2005 Fiesta Bowl loss to the Utes.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 27 – Utah 17

USC Trojans (-21) @ Hawaii Warriors
Thursday, September 2nd
11:00 ET, Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, HI

For all intents and purposes, this game is the equivalent of USC's bowl game this year, since the Men of Troy have been ruled ineligible for postseason play this year. If the Trojans are ready and raring to go, this game won't be close from the get go. HC Lane Kiffin has had months to get ready for this crazy passing attack that Hawaii is going to be bringing to the table, and as long as QB Brett Moniz and WR Greg Salas are at least mildly contained, the Trojans should have no problems. Look for QB Matt Barkley to get his second season in So Cal off to a good start, as USC should be able to handle the Warriors with ease. Had this been a normal year for the Trojans, they would be five TD favorites. The adjustment for the bowl suspension is just too much.

Prediction: USC 55 – Hawaii 17

Cappersinfo.com begins its new weekly installment of the Top 10 Teams to bet on across all of sports that you should be betting on religiously this season.  We breakdown the top teams ATS, combine all sports, and rank them. Teams ranked by Score Coefficient Ranking (SCR), which takes the amount of money earned over the course of the season and divides it by the number of games played in relation to games that will be played. Must have 18 games played to qualify.

1: Oregon State Beavers (College Basketball) (14-5 ATS, +$850) (SCR: 34.0) The Beavers continued to roll for college basketball betting fans by taking a 63-55 SU win at Arizona on Saturday and covering ASU by the hook on Thursday.

2: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (College Basketball) (14-5 ATS, +$850) (SCR: 34.0) Watch out for Southern Miss! The Golden Eagles have covered eight out of nine, including roadies at UTEP, UAB, Houston, and now Tulsa. A 66-50 win against Rice was more than enough to beat the spread on Saturday.

3: North Texas Mean Green (College Basketball) (13-5-1 ATS, +$750) (SCR: 33.9) North Texas' win over Denver on Saturday helped keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive. A 68-46 win at New Orleans on Thursday was far more impressive.

4: Syracuse Orange (College Basketball) (15-6 ATS, +$840) (SCR: 31.2) Any time you can say that you've won ten straight Big East games and are 7-3 ATS in those games, you've done something special. Syracuse gets a pass for "only" beating Connecticut by five as ten-point favorites.

5: Kansas State Wildcats (College Basketball) (13-5-1 ATS, +$750) (SCR: 30.0) KSU's romp over Colorado erased the memory of a close call against Iowa State of two weeks ago. That's four out of five for what may be the Big XII's second best squad.

6: Villanova Wildcats (College Basketball) (16-7 ATS, +$830) (SCR: 28.5) The Cats won't mind not covering Providence this week, especially after going into Morgantown and absolutely demolishing the Mountaineers.

7: Northwestern Wildcats (College Basketball) (14-6 ATS, +$740) (SCR: 28.5) A loss to Iowa midweek probably signaled the end of the season for the Wildcats. More defeats like that one will send Northwestern off of this list as well.

8: New Mexico Lobos (College Basketball) (16-7-2 ATS, +$830) (SCR: 27.6) Here's a team on the rise. The Lobos spanked UNLV midweek to assert itself as the top team in the MWC. They nearly blew it against Utah on Saturday, but a 68-65 win at least salvaged an ATS push.

9: Washington Capitals (Hockey) (33-29 ATS, +$2,000) (SCR: 24.3) The Caps slumped to three straight losses after posting 14 straight victories. Still, as long as the offense is averaging 3.9 goals per game and has scored at least three in 21 straight, the Caps are probably going to hang on to a spot on this list.

10: San Jose Sharks (Hockey) (31-31 ATS, +$1,908) (SCR: 23.3) San Jose only covered twice in this wicked five-game road trip right before the NHL's sabbatical for the Winter Olympics. The Sharks have a slew of home games coming up, and a lot of those will need to be multi-goal victories to move up on the power polls.
